The Lizzie Coffin & Elbridge Gerry Schools
June, 2008

Principal’s Note:

June is finally here! We have had a busy and productive school year! Thanks to the tireless efforts of teachers, staff, and parents, our children have had the opportunity to receive a first-rate education at Coffin and Gerry. It truly is a blessing to work in such a caring and dedicated school community.

The staff of Coffin and Gerry has done a fantastic job educating your children these past ten months. Between class presentations, shows, and in classroom performances, our children continue to do their best in all their efforts. This is due in large measure to the dedication of our teaching and support staff. If you have witnessed any of the many shows and presentations done by the children this spring, you will have seen first-hand the dedication and skill of our educators at Coffin and Gerry. If you get a chance, please be sure to take the opportunity and thank them for their work this year.

Though summer is a time to rest and enjoy the weather, it should also be a time to continue learning as well. The most important educational task parents can do for their children is to spend time reading with them. In a recent New York Times Book Review, it was noted: “Summer Reading is about teamwork—parents, teachers and children showing up for practice. It is not about showboating: Reading the most books, the most pages, racking up the numbers. It’s about patience, waiting for the right pitch, the book that comes right to you, and knocking that one out of the park.” Pertinent words indeed—for many of life’s activities.

Enjoy the summer, and we will see you in September!

Third Grade News:

The third graders are wrapping up a very exciting and productive year. We will be very busy over the last couple of weeks. On Tuesday, June 10th the entire third grade will be going on a Marblehead walking tour.  The students will get guided tours at several historic sites such as Abbot Hall, the Jeremiah Lee Mansion and St. Michael's Church. This tour ties in with our Marblehead town unit in social studies. Also, on Monday, June16th we have a field trip to Salem. The children will have a guided tour of the House of the Seven Gables and learn what Puritan life was like for a child. We look forward to the fun events we have planned for the end of the year!

From the Art Room:

I would like to thank all the parents who helped us band, dye, and wash our groovy tie-dyed t-shirts!  We couldn’t have done it without you!

I will be sending student artwork home on the last week of school.  Please send your child to school with a paper grocery bag on their last art day!  If you have extra bags, they would be a welcome donation.

Ms. Herchenhahn

Teacher-Staff Luncheon

A wonderful time was had by all during the Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheons.  The delicious food and pampering were a real treat!  We are truly lucky to have such a supportive PTO.  THANK YOU!

Reminder

Please call JoAnne or Linda if you have a change of address or telephone number.  It is very important that we keep your child’s records up to date and are able to reach you in an emergency.  Keep in mind that report cards are mailed home on the last day of school using the information that you have given us.

Lost & Found

Missing anything?  Please check the lost & found, it’s overflowing!  If not claimed the items at both schools will be donated to the Magic Hat thrift shop on the last day of school.

From the Library

Sincere thanks to all students and parents for helping to make our Spring Book Fair so successful! The students enjoyed themselves browsing and purchasing books for summer reading! We certainly appreciated your support and generosity.  Thank you to all the Book Fair volunteers, especially, Jill Dearborn and Lisa Glass, for all their efforts in making our book fair such a fun experience for all our students! We couldn’t have done it without all your help.

A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Mills for all her efforts in keeping us on track throughout the year!

Have a wonderful summer! Judi Halks
