As world language educators, it is our mission to provide students with the skills to function successfully in today’s global society and marketplace. Students should be able to convey their own thoughts in a language other than English, understand others, and relate to people in other countries in a meaningful way. Students will learn to communicate effectively with others in a modern or classical language through strengthening their vocabulary and language skills, developing a greater awareness of their own language and culture, learning to respect and appreciate other cultures, and becoming better prepared to live as creative, successful adults, and life-long learners.
The high school world language program concentrates heavily on oral communication in the modern languages and on comprehension in Latin. The primary goal is to prepare students to understand and to communicate in the target language. Reading and writing in the target language are also emphasized, particularly in year 3 and beyond. Various aspects of the culture and civilization of the countries where the language is spoken are incorporated in all courses. Students may also have personal experiences in another culture by participating in travel study and student exchange programs conducted by the department. |
