MHS Parents Council & SBMT Meeting
Welcome &
Introductions: 26 Attendees
PRESENTATIONS:
Guest Speaker Michael
Plansky – Athletic Director
Athletic success requires
effort and instruction; athletics teach life skills e.g. work ethic, leadership
skills, and students to advocate for themselves.
Each MHS sports team creates
their own social contract for which they agree to specific rules regarding
alcohol, practice and game absence and tardiness, etc. that may be more strict
than the MIA rules; MIA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics) rules
represent the minimum penalties & eligibility.
Coaches are assessed via
director observation at games and teamsÕ performance. Players evaluate the program at the end of each season. Coaches need to create an environment
of open communication. Mike will
have several sessions with all coaches as a team.
Issue resolution: First action needs to be that the
student approaches the coach. If
that is difficult he/she can ask Mike for help.
Bus situation: actions had
been underway to see if we can bus kids to practices when at other town
schools; difficult to support all sports equally with buses and drivers. Time
of practice might resolve much of the problem (getting to the right place at
the right time). Practice start
times are a challenge due to the need to share fields and gyms with town Youth
sports but education comes first so need to be able to get extra help after
school. If practice start time is
3:30 it gives students an opportunity to get quick after school help and still
make it to the practice on time.
Mike is also working with
the community to work out practice conflicts with religious holidays, weekends.
Kristen Norman- Activities Coordinator
Kristen is defining her new
role. She shared a list of current
clubs; Club Fair is happening December 11, 2007 in the field house to encourage
new participation. Students who
are in the clubs will be representing their club at the Club Fair. Any new club requires a faculty advisor
and determination of a place to meet.
She is also very active in sports activities. More to follow as this role develops.
Treasurer:
$666 is being deposited from
note card sales.
Request through Judy Luise
from the senior class fundraiser to provide some upfront funds of $357 to help
pay for police detail and Community Center. The request came in late and still need more details but in
the meantime the funds were approved given they will be paid back to the
Council.
Gini Bowen, the MHS
librarian is running the annual fundraiser for the library this year being sponsored by the Spirit of Õ76,

Telephone System Update
Phone system still not
working properly.
Form was sent home with all
students (from all Marblehead public schools) with the expectation that the
form is filled out and returned.
ÒPrimaryÓ number receives any non-emergency messages; for any emergency the message goes to ALL the phone numbers listed. This process including more comprehensive
instructions on what data is needed will be made clearer as we move
forward. In the meantime, we have
developed a good starting database and the first ÒtestÓ call was made with the
system this past week.
Margie Slattery-Sumner from our MHS Kitchen received a tremendous score
during a recent Federal Audit and impressed the audit team with food choices
and overall operation.
Special thanks to Laura
Plunkett, Cathy Davis, and Laurie
Hark for your tremendous work helping out in the
office.
