twenty-five grants awarded for the 2003-2004 school year totaled over
$65,000 and are as follows:

- Teachers
As Scholars:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades K-12
District membership in a university-affiliated
professional development program. Faculty members have the opportunity
to attend 2-3 day seminars in specialized subject areas.

- Technology
Camp for Educators:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades K-12
Weeklong training for 24 teachers (8 elementary,
8 middle, 8 high school) to learn how to integrate technology
into the curriculum using Project MEET and Intel models.

- What
Good Readers Do:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades K-8
Five-day summer professional development program
open to 40 teachers designed to teach reading comprehension strategies
and techniques in all subjects.

- Symphony
by the Sea:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades 3-12 string/band students
Collaboration between Symphony by the Sea
and the Fine Arts Department. School-based concerts will be created
with pre-concert site visits by professional musicians.

- Bullying
Prevention:
All Elementary, Grades K-4
Student-based skits, directed by Deana's Fund
Theatre Group, focusing on the importance of communication and
strategies to reduce bullying with an evening program for parents.

- Success
with Everyday Math:
All Elementary, Grades 2-4
A web-based program integrating interactive computer
skills with hands-on learning. Designed for students who need
additional time learning the Everyday Math curriculum.

- Fourth
Grade Chorus:
All Elementary, Grade 4
Professional choral director, Nick Page, will
work with all elementary music teachers and lead fourth grade
students in a day-long workshop culminating in an evening performance.

Frost Gallery Guide:
All Elementary, Grade 4
Funding to produce the Marblehead Historical Society's
gallery guide distributed by the Society and utilized in the fourth
grade Marblehead history curriculum.

- Books
on Tape:
All Elementary, Grade 4
Quality books on tape purchased to supplement
the existing books on tape program. This program has been successful
in raising the reading levels of lower and mid-level readers.

Movement, & Mother Goose: Bell
School, Intensive Pre-K / K District-wide
Music program enabling individualized attention
to children with special needs.

- Books
to Begin On, First Steps in Literacy:
Bell School, Pre-K District-wide / K
This grant will provide funds to purchase fifty
age-appropriate books for emerging readers focusing on rhythm,
rhyme and refrain.

- Boston
Ballet, Classical Moves:
Eveleth School, Grades K-2
Portrayal of a career in a professional ballet
company including a performance. (This program was funded
2002-03 for the other elementary schools).

- Taking
Charge Strategies:
MMS, Grades 5-8
One-day teacher workshop focusing on strategies
to help students become more organized and independent learners.

- Yamaha
Keyboards: MMS,
Grades 5-8
This grant provides funds to the purchase two
Clavinova keyboards for the Middle School music department.

Book Publishing: MMS,
Grade 5
Provides funding for hardcover printing and binding
of students' individual 16-page written and full-color illustrated
books.

- Groupo
Fantasia:
MMS, Grade 6
A multi-cultural hands-on workshop introducing
students to the music, instruments and dance of the Caribbean
and Latin America.

Adventure:
MMS, Grade 7
An off-site community/team building program. Students
participate in trust-building activities to strengthen self-confidence
and mutual respect.

- Theatre
Espresso: MMS,
Grade 8
Interactive dramatic presentation of "Justice
at War: The Story of Japanese Internment Camps." Program
focuses on U. S. policy regarding Japanese-Americans during WWII.

- Creative
Writing Residency:
MCCPS, Grades 5-6
Provides funds for an artist-in-residence to foster
creative writing skills in an alternative and imaginative way.

S. Fish & Wildlife Salmon Restoration Program:
MCCPS, Grades 6 & 8
A cooperative partnership whereby students will
participate in the restoration of Atlantic salmon to the Merrimac
River.

Zero: MHS,
Grades 9-12
Professional training to help teachers develop
equitable standards for student evaluation and assessment in all
disciplines throughout the school.

- Art
History Enrichment:
MHS, Grades 9-12
Provides funds to purchase art prints, art history
slide sets and CD-ROMs for the library. Materials help develop
appreciation of various cross-cultural artistic trends and styles.

- Science,
Society, and a Culture of Inquiry:
MHS, Grades 9-12
A speaker series on scientific topics of high
interest and impact on society. Required for all AP science students
and open to all others.

- Senior
Project: MHS,
Grade 12
Provides funding for a project coordinator to
facilitate in-depth independent study programs designed by 25
individual students during the last semester of senior year.
