twenty-five grants awarded for the 2004-2005 school year totaled over
$70,000 and are as follows: |
- *Marblehead
Teachers As Scholars:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades K-12
District membership in a university-affiliated
professional development program. Faculty members have the opportunity
to attend 2-3 day seminars in specialized subject areas.

Camp for Educators:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades 6-12
Two week-long summer training courses for 22 teachers
(44 total) to learn how to integrate technology into the curriculum
via online resources. Teachers will also focus on web page creation.

- Educator's
Series:
District-wide, Teachers, Grades K-12
Professional development program for all teachers
and the community, consisting of four lectures by well-known educators
and authors focusing on literacy, assessment, community and the
arts.

- Techsploration:
all Elementary, Grades K-6
Captivating interactive presentations demonstrating
how science/math concepts are incorporated into daily life. Curriculum-related
programs include transportation, machines and electricity.

in the Shade:
all Elementary, Grades K-6
Music program providing students with introduction
to jazz and its history. Performance by professional musicians
will include examples of various music and how styles developed
in the U.S.

One's Voice—Authors to Students:
all Elementary, Grades 2, 4 & 6
Three nationally known authors will speak to students
about the writing process, how writers find their voices and how
to commit ideas to writing.

Funding for the purchase of historical fiction,
realistic fiction, picture books, poetry books, biographies and
traditional literature to supplement the school's library collection.

Funding to support curriculum in the areas of
African American history, music and the arts, author studies,
world cultures, women's history, science and sports.

- Fourth
Grade Gap:
Village School, Grade 4
Funding for a variety of fiction, non-fiction
and poetry books supporting 4th grade studies in geography, Chinese
culture and grade level authors.

Book Publishing:
Village School, Grade 5
Provide funding for each student to write and
illustrate a sixteen-page full color manuscript, professionally
printed and bound by a children's book publisher.

- World
Music and Orff Instrumentarium:
Village School, Grades 4-6
Orff Instruments (metallophones, glockenspiels,
xylophones) will be purchased to enrich general music class instruction.
A collection of World Music instruments will broaden students'
musical experience in the classroom and enhance 6th grade study
of World Cultures.

Classroom Training:
Village School, Grades 4-6
One-day introductory training for ten teachers
and a week-long intensive training session for six teachers at
the Northeast Foundation for Children, focused on practical classroom
strategies.

Smirkus:
Village School, Grades 4-6
During gym class, faculty and students participate
in non-competitive and life-enhancing adventures in circus arts;
two-week residency culminates in a final school-wide performance.

Curriculum-related slide presentations to help
further explore specific subject matter through observation, with
the development of critical thinking skills.

Village/MVMS, Grades 4-8
After-school programs for students who show a

will participate in weekly meetings and contests with other school
districts.

Collaboration between Symphony by the Sea and
the district's Fine Arts Department that includes school-based
concerts and pre-concert visits by professional musicians.

Students participate in challenge-based team/community
building activities off-site to help build confidence and trust.

Bodkins—The Odyssey:
MHS, Grade 9
Award-winning storyteller to present two books
of The Odyssey in assembly and three workshops.

Studies Resources:
MHS, Grade 11 and others
Funding for books, CDs, videos, art slides and
prints for the library media center to support this new course
of study.

Society, and a Culture of Inquiry:
MHS, Grades 9-12
Funding for a speaker series on scientific topics
of high interest and impact on society. AP science students must
attend seminars that are also open to all students, faculty and
Marblehead residents.

- *Senior
Project/Internship:
MHS, Grade 12
Provide funding for materials and expenses to
support seniors' personal design of independent studies and internships
that take place for four weeks during last quarter.

- Fourth
Grade Readers & Writers Project:
MCCPS, Grade 4
Created for students to develop greater interest
in independent reading. Funding for fiction, non-fiction, poetry,
short story anthologies, leveled texts, magazine subscriptions
and tapes.

- Creative
Multimedia :
MCCPS, Grades 4-8
Partial funding for enrichment program combining
creative writing, digital photography and computer photo editing.

- Building
Utopia:
MCCPS, Grade 8
Students will design and build self-sustaining
aquaponics structures that will grow both fish and plants. Funds
include building supplies for this science/technology/engineering
project.
