FIELD PRODUCTION AND EDITING

The Field Production and Editing course at M.H.S. introduces students to all phases and aspects of video production outside of the television studio.  The design of the course emphasizes hands-on experience through the production of student projects.

Since video production is of a group nature, attendance is a key element to success in this course.  It is also very important to work well as a team.  For this reason, attitude, effort, and the ability to work with others will be key factors in assessing final grades.

There is no textbook for this course, so a number of handouts will be used as study guides and to supplement material covered in class.  These handouts should be kept in a folder-style notebook that will be checked each quarter as part of your homework grade.  If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to see me for any handouts that were missed and to keep his or her notebook up to date.

The course will begin with an introduction to the equipment associated with video production on location.  The class will be divided into production teams to complete two short individual projects.  Each student will serve as the producer for his or her individual projects and will provide scripts for the crew.  After shooting the first of these productions, we will turn our attention to the equipment used in linear editing.  Non-linear editing technology will be used to complete the rest of our productions.

Following these individual projects, team productions will continue throughout the remainder of the course, and each round of productions will be followed by a review and critique phase.  We will also seek opportunities to produce school-related programming with other groups or classes within the district.

I am in school each morning by 7:15 am, and extra help hours are posted on the bulletin boards in D215 and the Control Room (you can stop by or make an appointment).  Be advised that MHS-TV is a shared facility, so you do need to schedule any equipment that you would like to use outside of class.

To produce their projects, Field Production and Editing students will need to leave the classroom and, in some instances, the MHS campus.  Please have a parent or legal guardian sign below to grant permission to this practice.
