Curriculum, Assessment, & Instructional Technology Blueprint Report

Ann Koufman-Frederick, April 2006

“Technology is the combination of human imagination and inventiveness, and the translation of ideas into reality using electronic tools”

--Dr. Edward Wenk, former Science Advisor to the White House, 1985

The use and integration of technology in the Marblehead Public Schools is multifaceted. It drives the learning and administrative functions of the school district and therefore is transparently incorporated into the daily work of students and faculty. The district aims to make the potential of information and communications technologies a reality. Our students and teachers are learning to integrate technology into their subject-specific classrooms and their use of the library. They are learning to use a variety of technologies to find information, evaluate bias and credibility, analyze data, synthesize and communicate ideas, solve problems, and collaborate with others. We are beginning to use online environments to organize and analyze student information and assessment results.

Curriculum renovations and initiatives K-12 are the result of the Assessment, Professional Development, and Instructional Technology programs. This report, Curriculum. Assessment, & Technology Blueprint, highlights specific projects as they relate to the district’s principal values. It updates the current work in curriculum, assessment, professional development, and instructional technology, as well as identifying next steps for the near future.

The Blueprint Goals each rely on the use of technology. They are also directly related to the district’s Principal Values in the following way:

·        Assessment Goal: Improve instructional practice and learning results with data-driven decisions.

Principal Values: Accountability, Academic Standards, Technology

·        Curriculum Application Goal: Improve student achievement by engaging teachers as instructional leaders; and, deepen student understanding with new tools for teaching and learning

Principal Values: Accountability, Academic Standards, Professional Development, Curriculum, and Technology

·        Collaboration Goal: Improve sharing of ideas and practices by nurturing a professional learning community.

Principal Values: Professional Development, Academic Standards, and Technology

·        Communication Goal: Facilitate easy access to school district information for faculty, students, parents and the community.

Principal Values: Accountability, Professional Development, and Technology

These Blueprint Goals were derived from the District’s Principal Values and are organized as an Educational Technology Hierarchy of Needs and Goals that target the ultimate goal of improving Learning Results. The Educational Technology Hierarchy of Needs and Goals begins with the foundational needs of Network Infrastructure & Hardware and Technical Services & Data. These functions support Communication, Collaboration, Curriculum Application and Assessment.

These Blueprint Goals and Principal Values and their strategies to achieve goal, criteria for success, primary participants, timeline, and status, provide a ‘blueprint” for success in the Marblehead Public Schools.
